Russia says Ukraine’s NATO non-accession needs “special attention”

(MENAFN) Russia on Monday emphasized that Ukraine’s potential non-accession to NATO requires “special attention” in ongoing negotiations over a possible peace settlement.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters: “Naturally, this issue is a key one, and it deserves special consideration compared to the others,” linking the matter directly to current diplomatic discussions.

Peskov’s comments followed remarks by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who described bilateral security guarantees from the US, Europe, and other countries as a “compromise” in place of NATO membership. This represents a significant shift from Kyiv’s long-standing goal of joining the alliance, which was formally incorporated into Ukraine’s Constitution after a parliamentary vote in 2019.

Russia has consistently opposed Ukraine joining NATO, with President Vladimir Putin previously calling such a move a “direct threat” to Moscow’s security in the days before the February 2022 invasion.

Regarding ongoing negotiations in Berlin on a potential peace agreement, Peskov noted that Washington is not providing Moscow with active updates on the talks but is awaiting a response from the US following the meetings.

On Sunday, Zelenskyy met with US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, and delegations from both countries in discussions that lasted over five hours. Talks continued on Monday, according to Ukrainian sources.

These consultations are part of a series of diplomatic efforts aimed at establishing a framework to end the over three-and-a-half-year conflict, with previous discussions held in Switzerland, the US, and Istanbul. Germany hosted the latest meetings ahead of a broader summit expected Monday evening, which will bring together Zelenskyy, European leaders, and representatives from the EU and NATO. US participation in that summit has not been confirmed.
